Winners of SCC’s Madam C.J. Walker Scholarship Attend Annual Meeting

Honors for Imani Elaine Porter of Hampton University and Joy Rutherford of The Ohio State University.

Imani Elaine Porter of Hampton University and Joy Rutherford of The Ohio State University were named 2022 winners of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists’ Madam C.J. Walker Scholarship, sponsored by Mary Kay. The scholarship was created to support of under-represented minority students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in chemical, physical, medical, pharmaceutical, biological, or related sciences and technology.

Elaine Porter is a second year undergraduate in biochemistry and Rutherford  is fourth year PhD candidate in chemistry. The selection committee, which included Madam C.J. Walker’s great-great-granddaughter, chose Porter and Rutherford from a group  of impressive candidates. Porter and Rutherford each received a $5,000 scholarship.
