Which Way Up…er, Forward?

Road Warriors rejoice! Newark Liberty Airport is getting a makeover (again). Widely considered one of the worst international airports in the US, if not the world, Newark will build a new Terminal B. Problem is, planners don’t know when demolition will begin, and more disconcerting, where the new terminal will be located.

A fancy new terminal won’t solve EWR’s biggest problems. Every major US airport, except for Newark, has five runways: two for takeoff, two for landing and a short one for smaller planes. Newark has only two full-length and one short runway. Any construction project should include more, but the New York metropolitan area is so congested, highways would have to be diverted to accommodate the airport. Despite these decade-long constraints, EWR continues to expand service and delays continue to grow.

What do airport woes have to do with the household and personal products industry? Poor planning. When leaders don’t know which way is up, it’s tough to keep moving forward. The new year is fast approaching. There are wars in the Middle East and Eastern Europe as well as saber-rattling in Asia. The US Presidential Election creates more chaos—no matter the winner. Times like this call for better forecasting, planning and execution; VUCA be damned.

On the topic of the damned, one more gripe about Newark Liberty. The Port Authority of New York/New Jersey is responsible for EWR. They’re the same folks who brought in a monorail shuttle service to traffic folks around the airport. Unfortunately, the service is more appropriate for southern climates; whenever there’s a bit of snow or ice, Newark’s AirTrain comes to a screeching halt. A system designed for Walt Disney World won’t fly in Newark, NJ. Even leaders of Mickey Mouse organizations should realize that.
