The multibillion-dollar sunscreen category is always awash in new product activity, new science and new controversy. Leading brands such as Neutrogena, Banana Boat, Sun Bum and Coppertone recently rolled out their offerings for Summer 2025. The NPD comes at a time when suncare product sales increased less than 3% last year, according to Circana. That represents the slowest increase in years. 

And yet, UV protection has never been more critical. The incidence of skin cancer continues to rise. US formulators seek new filters that are already available in Europe and other parts of the world. At the same time, industry groups such as the Personal Care Products Council work with the US Food and Drug Administration to get new filters to market.
