Delivers actives to different layers of the skin to ensure efficacy.
November 3, 2020
By: Happi Staff
Active ingredients are the key to skin care products in helping to maintain vibrant, youthful skin. Formulators are continuously trying to strike a balance of using an active ingredient at a use level that fits within the parameters of their brand while offering consumers a perceived benefit. Something not always considered though is whether the active ingredient is reaching the layer of the skin where it can provide the most activity. If it is not, that active may not be working optimally in providing the efficacy it could have on skin. Although there have been limitations with traditional delivery systems, Ultra Chemical as a supplier has introduced an innovative technology in personal care that offers biomimetic targeted delivery of actives to different layers of the skin, inspired by the skin’s own biological transporters. Bicosome is composed of two lipid assemblies: internal smart discs that carry the active and an external lipid vesicle enclosing the discs, thereby double encapsulating the active ingredient. When Bicosomes are applied on the skin, the outer vesicle fuses on the skin surface, the way a liposome would, but the advantage is that it releases smart disks which penetrate selectively through the narrow inter-corneocytes spaces of the SC reaching target skin layers. Once there, Bicosomes respond to internal stimulus and release the active molecules, where their own lipid structure is slowly integrated into the skin lipid matrix, reinforcing its architecture. Smart discs are designed to reach specific skin layers where the active ingredient needs to be by tailoring the affinity of the smart discs with the environment of the target skin layers. In addition to the delivery functionality, the double encapsulation provides protection to the actives and allows for an active to reach the skin without causing any damage. The Bicosome technology is available for multiple skin targets including counteracting sun exposure, restoring lipid structure and elasticity, increased brightness and spot reduction, wrinkle reduction and sebum control.
