The End of the Innocence

It’s me. I’m part of the problem. Today, just as I do every Sunday, I’m posting promos, news and features to Happi’s social media sites: LinkedIn, X and Facebook. As I’ve noted before, social media is anything but social. But it’s an easy, mindless medium to get someone’s attention—if only for a millisecond.

Social media is having more than a millisecond or a moment; it’s front-page stuff these days. Following a US Supreme Court decision, TikTok went dark, but was back in business in less than 10 hours. Don’t fret, Tokkers, the medium probably won’t go away anytime soon. If it does, RedNote is ready to take its place.

Meanwhile, Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram and What’s App, recently announced it would cease fact-checking and change content moderation guidelines. As for X? Well, when the owner has a friend in The White House, it’s a safe bet he’s got the ear and won the heart of the President. Proponents proclaim that these changes are all part of free speech. But like freedom itself, freedom isn’t free. It may take years to understand the damage caused by tethering. The Biden Administration’s US Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, went so far as to ask Congress to require warning labels on social media platforms.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend’s 10-year-old son proudly announced he received his first iPhone for Christmas. I can’t help equating that Christmas gift box to Pandora’s Box. Alex always has his nose in a book, his hand on a tennis racquet or his foot on a soccer ball. We discuss Black Holes, Worm Holes and galaxies beyond our Milky Way. But with an iPhone in his pocket and social media at his fingertips, will his curious mind succumb to mind-numbing scrolling? Nobody knows exactly when innocence ends, but opening the door to social media certainly accelerates it.

Dry January is a thing. How about Unfettered February? It would give kids and adults an opportunity to unplug and learn what social truly means.

If you’re reading this, it’s safe to assume you’ve already put down the cellphone—if only for a little while. Inside this issue, you’ll find articles on skincare, spa trends, odor protection and more.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Happi. As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions.
