Now available commercially in the U.S., Alcoguard H 5240 uses innovative hybrid bio-polymer technology that combines the benefits of both synthetic and natural polymer components to provide effective performance and an improved environmental profile, according to the company. It is designed to prevent scale formation in automatic dishwashing and laundry detergents and other applications where synthetic water-soluble polymers are typically used. Acknowledging the positive environmental impact of AkzoNobel’s hybrid bio-polymer technology, the U.S. Environ- mental Protection Agency has nominated the new technology for “P2” (pollution prevention) recognition. The P2 Recognition Project honors companies for developing and commercializing innovative chemistries and technologies that further pollution prevention and other environmental goals. The new grade is called Basotect W and it cleans even more efficiently and is whiter than the established version, according to the company. It is certified to Öko-Tex Standard 100 in product class II, which demonstrates that Basotect W has no adverse health effects when used or processed. This means that no substances that are harmful to one’s health are released and absorbed through the skin. The foam has also been tested to Japanese Law 112, one of the most stringent tests for formaldehyde in the world. Unlike other cleaning materials, Basotect W is well below the permissible limits. Because of its slightly abrasive properties, Basotect W, like the established cleaning grade V 3012, is used as a household cleaning eraser. It is used without additional cleaning agents and works like a soft sandpaper, because, unlike other foams, melamine is as hard as glass, but the fine cell structure provides the product’s flexibility. When moistened with water, the foam slides easily, removing heavy dirt on a variety of surfaces such as tiles, ceramic stove tops, ceramics, doors, leather seats and hubcaps. This abrasive quality makes Basotect W a product that is used up like an eraser over the course of time. Free radicals generated by skin-penetrating UVA rays attack and destroy collagen and elastin in the dermis layer of the skin, resulting in premature aging and wrinkling. When spending time outside, high SPF sunscreens can provide some protection from the sun’s harmful rays. In response, Ariel Laboratories created an all-natural, non-whitening sunscreen line with SPFs that range from 15-60. To counteract the aging effects of UVA rays, Ariel has also added peptides, including pepha-timp, which capture free radicals and protect collagen to keep it from degenerating. Ariel can add vitamins A, C and E to its sunscreen formulas to provide more emollient properties and smooth the skin, said the company. According to Peter Bohm, Ariel Laboratories’ president and master chemist, “Our exclusive all-natural sunscreen line preserves the sun-reflecting particles of a physical blocker, using all-natural ingredients that address sensitive skin concerns. Then, when you consider that we have been able to formulate a non-whitening, high SPF physical blocker with the added benefit of anti-aging ingredients, it becomes crystal clear that you can combine aesthetics and functionality to produce effective skin protection in the sun.” The company also offers custom formulations. According to Susan Padula, technical director, Ariel Laboratories is a custom formulation laboratory. She said, “While we do have an impressive array of stock cosmetic and health and beauty product formulas, custom formulating is what we do every day.” More info: www.ariellabs.com New Sebum Control Active From Presperse Presperse has introduced a new active ingredient for sebum control called Panadoxine P, which is pro-vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 plays an important role in skin health; deficiency of vitamin B6 causes skin inflammation, swelling, misbalance in metabolism of proteins and fats. However, vitamin B6 is extremely photo-unstable and cannot be used in topical formulations. According to Presperse, Panadoxine P has superior stability, overcoming the photo-stability issues of vitamin B6, making it an excellent choice for skin care formulations. More info: www.presperse.com Croda Launches Solaveil SpeXtra Broad spectrum protection from sunscreens is becoming increasingly important to consumers, as the dangers of both UVA and UVB rays become more well known. Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to formulate global sunscreen products that possess optimal protection from UVA and UVB, as regional variations in applicable regulations and consumer preferences restrict formulators to a few active ingredients that are not easily combined to provide high SPF and adequate UVA protection. Combining an exceptional level of UVA protection with high UVB efficacy, Croda globally introduced the Solaveil SpeXtra line of innovative titanium dioxide dispersions. These dispersions allow for the formulation of high SPF, broad spectrum, global, sun protection products using a single active ingredient. Solaveil SpeXtra dispersions are specifically designed to deliver an optimal balance of UVA and UVB attenuation, while providing elegant skin feel and without giving excessive whitening, according to Croda. Solaveil SpeXtra dispersions are photostable for long-lasting UV protection and are ideal for use in beach sun care. HallBrite PSF (INCI: undecylcrylene dimethicone) combines HallStar’s proven, triplet-quenching photostabilizer technology with the aesthetic benefits of silicone. The resulting organo-modified silicone polymer provides a lubricious skin feel and photostabilizes sunscreen active ingredients such as avobenzone. The patent-pending compound is a multifunctional ingredient that delivers the silky feel consumers want in a lotion or cream with the photostabilization needed to provide long-lasting and effective UVA and UVB sun protection. As an added benefit, HallBrite PSF may also aid in the dispersion of metal oxides such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and iron oxide in both sun care and color makeup applications.
