Shin-Etsu Updates Sunscreen Toolbox

In response to the continuing concern over ozone depletion and consumers’ increased exposure to heightened levels of UV radiation and potential skin damage, Shin-Etsu Silicones of America, Inc. (SESA)has recently updated its sunscreen toolbox. According to the company, these additions to the line include silicones that offer key benefits such as durable UV protection, high water resistance, excellent skin feel, wider formulation latitude and enhanced SPF values. The SESA products include silicone-acrylate film formers, MQ resin film formersand amino-modified gum blends that have features to overcome the low water resistance and heavy feel deficiencies of current O/W systems that use organic sunscreens as protectants.

The SESA sunscreen portfolio now includes the KP-545L silicone-acrylate film former, KF-7312L MQ resin film former and KF-8020 amino-modified gum blend. KP-545L and KF-7312L feature 2cs dimethicone as its base fluid and therefore provides an effective, quality alternative to similar D5 derivative materials. KF-8020 uses a higher viscosity dimethicone.

The combined use of ingredients in the SESA sunscreen toolbox deliver desired physical properties and benefits to existing sunscreen formulations, offering advanced UV protection and sensory/feel benefits.

Rahn introduced its latest active ingredient, Proteolea, which is said to rejuvenate the eye area by reversing the effects of time in only four weeks.

Olive leaf extract with oleuropein activates the proteasome, the natural recycling system of skin cells, which slows down with age. Excessive cellular waste, such as oxidized proteins, can be degraded more efficiently. Extract from Chinese date (jujube) enhances the antioxidative defense system of the skin, thus preventing the formation of oxidized proteins. Well-known for its tonic properties, the extract provides dull and tired skin with a new burst of freshness, according to the company. The polysaccharide levan builds a tightening film on the skin.

Proteolea is designed for any kind of anti-aging products for the face and body. It is water-soluble and can be easily incorporated into cosmetic formulations such as creams, gels and emulsions.

DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products announced that its renewably sourced Zemea propanediol has been reviewed and certified by the USDA as a 100% biobased ingredient. Interpolymer debuted a breakthrough in long-lasting, water-based nail polish technology, according to the company. Based on Syntran PC5620, this technology is designated SAFE—a “State-of-the-art” Acrylate Film-forming Emulsion with superior gloss, adhesion, water resistance and hardness.

The company’s proprietary SAFE technology also provides quick dry time and easy removability with alcohol, as well as the capability to formulate a nail polish that is not only hydrating but promotes healthy growth of nails and is compatible with water-based actives.

Sabinsa has rolled out Silbinol and pTeroWhite, proprietary natural pterostilbene, for nutritional and cosmetic applications, respectively, extracted from sustainably-grown dried heartwood of pterocarpus marsupium (Kino tree of India). These products are also available in synthetic versions.

Silbinol and pTeroWhite offer antioxidant support and anti-inflammatory activity, to name a few benefits.
