Want to get under formulating expert Valerie George’s skin? Talk about the “skinification of the scalp.”
“The scalp is skin,” she told attendees at SWSCC Suppliers’ Day. “And interest in scalp care products is surging.”

To formulate effective scalp care products, George advised creating a scalp cleanser that includes surfactants that don’t leave a residue, penetration enhancers, microbiome regulators, and gentle exfoliants.
“Remember less is more! Your scalp just needs a little help, the less you put in your formula the better,” she told attendees. “But remember the pH and make sure everything rinses off without leaving a residue.”
What ingredients would George avoid? Triglycerides, physical exfoliants, strong chemical exfoliants, sensitizing glycols, monoethanolamine, and botanical extracts and fragrances.
“Triglycerides feed bad organisms on your scalp! But fractionated coconut oil (C8) is okay,” she added.
