Keith O’Briant, CEO of Lacerta Life Sciences—a Louisiana-based medical device company focused on developing advanced wound care products—saw the “remarkable” benefits that its Lacertamatrix Hyaluronic Acid Foam Dressing had on patients whose severely compromised skin was due to head and neck radiation therapy.

“People would end up crying and hugging at the result,” O’Briant, a one-time executive at Pfizer and Shire, told Happi.

Lacertamatrix Hyaluronic Acid (HA) foam dressing is a biologically compatible esterified reptilian derived HA with a silicone top layer. Working to normalize pH and quell inflammation, reptilian HA has a strong net negative charge that makes it an ideal scaffold to protect cells and labile growth factors thereby promoting cell proliferation and angiogenesis, according to the company.

According to the website description, it is a “chemically crosslinked HA with a serine benzyl ester using the zero-length crosslinker EDC (N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N’-ethyl carbodiimide and NHS (N-Hydroxysuccinimide), engineered to deliver longer wear times in the wound bed.”

The HA works by forming a gel once it’s placed in a wound. The biomaterial is resorbed over time while providing protection from contamination to cleanse the wound and balance moisture around the clock.

Prior to application, the silicone layer can be removed (or later in the healing process) without damaging the wound bed or causing discomfort to the patient.

“The lightbulb went off that if it works this well on compromised skin, just think what it would do post-procedure or aging skin,” said O’Briant.

‘Hydration to the Power of Infinity’

Feeling a “moral obligation” to capitalize on the benefits of hyaluronic acid used in this capacity—something O’Briant called an “underutilized molecule” that doesn’t get enough credit for its myriad capabilities—he sought to create his own company he would call Hydrinity Accelerated Skin Science. The name, which means “hydration to the power of infinity,” utilizes two-times the amount of injectable-grade HA in high-end, fragrance-free skincare products than similar offerings on the market using injectable-grade HA.

The company’s flagship product, Restorative HA Serum, is formulated with PPM Technology to enhance hydration, brightness and luminosity while improving texture and expediting the healing of delicate, compromised skin.

Another one of Hydrinity’s popular formulas is a purifying mist called Hyacyn Active. Described as a solution for on-the-go cleansing either as a refresher to cleanse skin throughout the day or a quick spritz over the face post-workout, the lightweight, microbiome-friendly treatment spray is safe for all skin types, balances the skin’s pH to maximize the effectiveness of serums and promotes healing.

It also doubles as a fast remedy to quell redness in eczema- and rosacea-prone skin. Formulated with hypochlorous acid, the potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent works to treat flare-ups and inflammation tied to these skin disorders in sensitive skin types, overtime.   Last year, Kline named Hydrinity the fastest-growing professional skin care brand in the US.
