Names to know at the Society of Cosmetic Chemists.

In honor of UNESCO’s 2026 International Day of Women and Girls in Science, February 11, we’re shining a spotlight on women elevating the beauty industry through their work with the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC).
While SCC’s female membership was below 10% in the early 1960s, the number of women involved with this longstanding organization has continued to grow. Today, women represent approximately 64% of membership, according to Erica O’Grady, CAE, chief executive officer of SCC.
The first woman to serve as SCC president was Sophie L. Plechner (1903-1992). The year was 1961, and during her term at the top post of the Society, females represented just 8% of membership. In addition to her pioneering role as the first woman president, Plechner was the second female recipient of the SCC’s Masion G deNavarre Medal Award. (Florence Wall was the first female winner, earning her deNavarre honor in 1956.)
Currently, Marisa Plescia is SCC president.
Serving on the SCC board this year are Valerie George, who is vice-president elect, and Mindy Goldstein, PhD, who is secretary for 2026.
