Men’s personal care is on a winning streak. Star athletes from Jake Paul to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson are some of the players leading this new arena, and men’s luxury fragrance is also on top of its game. Now, musicians are contributing to its lingering appeal.
According to Circana, fragrance remains the top performer. Q1 dollar sales rose 4% in the prestige channel and 8% in the mass market. In prestige outlets, gift set sales soared 45%, thanks to mini and travel size sets. High concentrations including eau de parfums and parfums led gains.
Now more than ever, memory-making takes on new meaning with the spritz of fine fragrance as the trigger. The category continues its evolution into a novel invisible accessory boosting not only mood, but a sense of dignity, individuality and purpose.
Here, a shortlist of top fragrances that we deem top-of-mind for fragrance buyers this Father’s Day.
Reggae icon Bob Marley once said his music will go on forever.
Now, the Marley family wants that legacy to linger even further with a fragrance line for men and women. Tom Watson, global licensing director at IMH Perfume, said the collection aims to exemplify a thoughtful product line extension where cultural heritage meets luxury fragrance.
Each fragrance is grouped into two trios of feminine and masculine fragrances and made with mood-enhancing technology. Some of them are named for the legend’s most sensual songs. The masculine scent that has most captured our heart is “Lights Down Low.” This love-inspired fragrance, red wine in color, was named for the love song Marley had written about his romance with Cindy Breakspeare, Miss World Jamaica 1976 and the mother of Marley’s son, Damian Marley.
Crafted by Givaudan’s Doug Falcone, the scent aims to evoke feelings of intimacy with notes of pomelo, clove leaf, sea salt, ambrette and vanilla.
Lights Down Low retails for $140 or can be purchased with the Masculine trio with Simmer Down and Mellow Mood for $380 on marleyfragrance.com.
Billboard Hot 100 Chart topper and four-time Grammy winner Drake, considered to be one of the greatest rappers of the 21st century, is now making the fragrance world sing.
This past spring, the rapper debuted his inaugural Better World Fragrance House with the launch of his first eau de parfum. And, with a name like “Summer Mink,” you can bet it’s as blazing as his prolific catalogue.
Summer Mink aims to defy convention. It embraces the unexpected with indulgences as varied as donning a mink coat in the summertime while championing bold sophistication. Drake teamed with longtime collaborator, perfumer Michael Carby of Givaudan, to expand Better World Fragrance House’s vision of “crafting distinctive luxury scents that curate personal space and elevate everyday experiences.” Housed in a globe-shaped bottle embellished with the brand’s signature midnight blue color, the scent embodies a rich, amber woody composition. It opens with vibrant Italian citrus and sage, unfolding into a warm, spicy floral heart of Jasmine Sambac before settling into a base of vetiver and creamy musk. The fragrance’s architectural bottle serves to reflect the brand’s ethos: uniting opposing elements through design with its sleek navy sphere balanced atop a sharp, rectangular base.
The 3.4oz EDP spray retails for $148 at betterworldfragrancehouse.com, at over 1,400 Ulta Beauty locations nationwide and Ulta.com.
For Guess, a man’s journey is marked by his worldly travels, and an iconic trip should be bottled up. To help complement the globe-trolling man’s spontaneous, yet sexy travels, Guess has released Guess Iconic for Men.
The fragrance contains spicy green scents, blending clary sage, mate and geranium. Billed a balance of earthy vetiver, warm labdanum and animalic suede, the perfume captures the adventurer’s three sentiments: freedom, attraction and confidence. Wrapped in a brown leather belt with hand-stitching details, an upscale heel highlights its gold-embossed logos and features an aligned brown leather texture complete with the bold “G” symbol.
Guess Iconic for Men is available in 100mL at $78, 50mL for $60 and 30mL at $48 exclusively in Guess stores and online at www.guess.com and JCPenney.
It’s the Y YSL Beauty fans have been waiting for.
Four years after the original Y Eau de Parfum was discontinued and timed for Father’s Day, the brand has re-released it with a new formula that touts itself a bolder, woodier fragrance that is longer lasting than the original. Modeled by Lenny Kravitz, key notes in the new formula are fresh sage, crisp geranium and sensual wood in a scent family that is earthy and woody.
The two-piece Father’s Day Gift Set features a 3.4 oz. eau de parfum spray and 0.33 oz. eau de parfum travel spray packaged in a couture-inspired and masculine keepsake box made with 100% cardboard sourced from sustainably managed forests. The new Y Eau de Parfum retails for $160 here.
If there’s one thing men love (besides the smell of their cologne) is the whiff of an ice-cold glass of whiskey after a stressful day. Bath & Body Works’ Whiskey Toast boasts the smell of success: raising a toast to a mission-complete day. Fragrance notes include a twist of citrus, smooth whiskey and oakwood. Available for $64.95 here.
Fans of Dr. Squatch love their collection of organic bar soaps and shave creams designed to make men smell like men: rugged and handsome. The burly personal care brand is also raising a glass to men’s cherished beverage: bourbon. With notes of cedarwood, clove and patchouli, Dr. Squatch’s Fireside Bourbon Cologne will bring comfort and pizazz as the final step in a man’s self-care regimen. Available for $59 here.
Speaking of smelling rugged, another brand that aims to transport men to the Great Outdoors in the bliss of solitude (think the great Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden”) is Le Labo’s Santal 33. The scent takes wearers to the wide plains of the American West. Picture handsome faces glowing in the camp firelight beneath a dying day of indigo-blue skies. The man is embraced by nothing but the comfort of the still night and gentle desert wind at his back; something the makers call “freedom.” This is the experience of Santal 33. It mixes cardamom and notes of iris and violet, which crackle in the formula. Added into this smoking wood alloy (Australian sandalwood, cedarwood) are spicy, leathery and musky notes. Available for $235 here.
Diesel’s bestselling fragrance line expands with Only The Brave Eau de Parfum, a scent that embodies the deepest state of bravery, per the brand. With Italian mandarin, French sage and a warm suede accord, this bold blend is housed in the iconic clenched fist bottle, now reimagined in a deep blue gradient. It’s a powerful gift for the father figure who shows up with both resilience and heart, per marketers. Diesel Only retails for $90 at Macys.
Drakkar Bleu by Guy Laroche brings a refreshing escape for the boater dad, over the smoker. It opens with cool mint, green apple and bergamot, flows through lavender and violet leaf, and grounds itself in earthy patchouli and fir balsam moss. It’s marketed as fresh, confident and quietly commanding. Drakkar Bleu retails for $68 at JCPenney.
