New York City-based market research firm Spate has teamed with Grant Industries to release a new report examining the top-rising ingredients in skin care.

Currently, the top trends by increase in average monthly search volume arevVitamin C, hyaluronic, glycolic and salicylic acids, tretinoin, niacinamide, snail mucin, castor oil, ceramide and peptide. Vitamin C saw the highest volume increase – 82.6K – with a year-over-year (YoY) change of 12.6% with a current search tally of 736.3K. Hyaluronic acid followed behind at roughly 362K with an increase of 54.9K, representative of a year-over-year change of 17.9%. Glycolic acid and tretinoin followed with 244.5K and 254.9K Google search, respectively. Niacinamide garnered 178.7K searches, a year-over-year change of 26.7% and an increase of 37.7K.

The report also includes details on search for tretinoin cream. According to the report, queries such as “what is tretinoin cream” and “tretinoin 0.05 cream” are among the top keyword searches. According to Spate, tretinoin has emerged as a prominent ingredient in the skincare product category, with consumers seeking it as topical treatments and with high intrigue in its effectiveness, against, for instance, acne.

Spate and Grant Industries say brands can capitalize on this trend by integrating tretinoin into their formulations or presenting alternative solutions that stand on par with its efficacy, while offering products that pair it with other ingredients that can boost efficacy.
