The Skin Cancer Foundation advocates for access to new sunscreen options to prevent skin cancer and save lives. The Foundation urges everyone to sign the letter of support for the SAFE Sunscreen Standards Act and contact your Member of Congress as soon as possible. As US skin cancer rates rise, sunscreen innovation has been at a standstill for decades. With new, advanced sunscreen ingredients available in other markets around the world, status quo is NOT acceptable for the American public, according to the Foundation.

If passed, the SAFE Sunscreen Standards Act will:

  • Ensure that the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) quickly approves new sunscreen ingredients, giving the public greater access to new and advanced ingredients to protect their skin and lower skin cancer risk.
  • Reduce the FDA’s reliance on animal testing data, requiring the agency to establish clearer, more flexible standards for evaluating sunscreen ingredients.

Urgent Timing

The House Energy & Commerce Committee is currently considering the bill and may vote as early as the week of July 21. SCF urges members to SUPPORT the bill’s inclusion in the over-the-counter monograph user fee (OMUFA) reauthorization legislation. If the bill is included, it will proceed to the entire House of Representatives, as part of the OMUFA package, for a full vote before moving to the Senate.

What You Can Do Now: Sign the letter of support, urge your legislators to vote YES and get tools to spread the word! To sign the petition, click here.
