RIFM’s Senior Scientist for Systemic Toxicology To Participate at European Society

The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials’ (RIFM) Senior Scientist for Systemic Toxicology, Kaushal Joshi, PhD, will participate at the European Society of Toxicology In Vitro in Prague, Czech Republic, June 3-6, 2024.

Dr. Joshi will present the results of a pilot animal-alternative method study during the Organ-on-a-Chip & Microphysiology Systems Session on June 4, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Central European Summer Time.

“RIFM is developing several animal-alternative methods for evaluating potential systemic toxicity,” Dr. Joshi explained. “As part of that ongoing work, we’ve identified a promising possibility: the human integrated multiple organ platform, which mimics systemic organs like the liver or kidneys without having to test on humans or animals.”

RIFM collaborated with LifeNet Health LifeSciences on a pilot study to evaluate coumarin’s kinetics, metabolism, and toxicity in an in vitro three-organ integrated microphysiological system (MPS) model. Coumarin is a common fragrance and flavor ingredient that naturally occurs in many plants.

“I’m excited to participate in this congress focusing on non-animal methodologies,” Dr. Joshi said. “Bringing RIFM’s science to the conversation around sessions that are meticulously designed to cater to a wide spectrum of interests and specializations within the domain of in vitro toxicology.”
