‘Sun protection shouldn't feel clinical or boring,’ says co-creator Dr. Whitney Hovenic.

A new player in suncare wants to get real about sun protection. This means accepting life’s harsh truths (and miracles!) … all while having some fun doing it!
Enter Spooge. Its co-creator, Hillary Shieve, lives with heightened skin cancer risk given a kidney transplant. This hasn’t stopped her from learning to adjust to a more proactive lifestyle and learning to laugh at life’s rainstorms in the process.
“As a transplant survivor, I’ve lived with an increased risk of skin cancer for years, but I never found a sunscreen that truly fit into my everyday life,” said Schieve. “Spooge is about changing that. We wanted to make SPF feel personal—bold, accessible and unapologetically real.”
Spooge – an acronym for Shield People Optimally Outdoors Guard Everyone – was created with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Whitney Hovenic. The brand bills itself a skincare-meets-suncare hybrid and was launched at Cosmoprof North America this month.
“We wanted to create sunscreen that feels like skincare—something people actually look forward to using,” explained Dr. Hovenic. “Because sun protection shouldn’t feel clinical or boring. And most importantly, I’m tired of removing skin cancer from young patients! I want you to use protection, so you don’t have skin regrets later.”
Honoring sunscreen’s preferred around-the-clock usage by dermatologists, Spooge is designed for all day, all seasons and all-weather wear. The makers say the formulas transcend basic UV defense with skin-first ingredients into high-performance mineral blends that “feel as good as they protect.”
The sunscreen was developed with rising melanoma rates—especially among younger people. With a playful name, Spooge’s mission is serious when it comes to skin protection and aiming to shift the narrative around sunscreen from obligatory to a joyful ritual.
The launch collection includes four habit-forming, mineral-based all-screens that deliver broad-spectrum protection and work like skincare:
The OG (Face + Body) is a high-performance sunscreen with SPF 30 packed with hydrators and antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E and aloe leaf. The OG delivers a sheer, lightweight, non-greasy finish that blends in seamlessly without a chalky mess or sticky feel.
Cheeky (Face + Body) Inspired by cheeky bikinis and the rise in young women getting melanoma, it’s SPF that doesn’t skip the buttocks. The shimmering, illuminating mineral all-screen (SPF 30) protects from “cheek-to-cheek.” Infused with caffeine, magnesium and uva-ursi extract to help brighten and firm, iron oxides provide a subtle glow.
Dew Me (Face – Tinted): A glowy, hydrating all-screen (SPF 30) acts like skincare—powered by hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, allantoin and iron oxides – for blue light protection and a radiant, dewy finish.
Ghosted (Face): An oil-free, mineral all-screen (SPF 30) with a cloud-like feel that blends in seamlessly. Bisabolol, squalane and vitamin E calm and hydrate for a smooth, healthy complexion.
All Spooge formulas are vegan, reef-safe and free from harsh chemicals and available on spooge.co.
