Horst Rechelbacher, founder of Aveda Corp., died Feb. 15 at his home in Osceola, WI. He was 72.

The cause was pancreatic cancer.

Born in Austria, Rechelbache founded Aveda Corp., which grew from a small salon hair care brand to a leading player in natural and eco-friendly personal care. Rechelbacher sold Aveda to The Estée Lauder Companies in 1997 in deal that was valued at around $300 million.

He then created Intelligent Nutrients, which is squarely focused on organic, nontoxic health and beauty products.

Rechelbacher is survived by his wife, Kiran Stordalen, daughter Nicole Thomas and son Peter Rechelbacher.
