In a new survey from the American Cleaning Institute (ACI), 80% of Americans said they plan to spring clean this year—a number inline with data released in 2025. Yet, despite their consistent enthusiasm for this popular practice, many Americans admit they struggle to keep up with other cleaning tasks that should happen on a more regular basis.

The survey, conducted by Wakefield Research, found that 56% of respondents would be embarrassed to share the last time they cleaned their refrigerator. Forty percent said the same about their toilet.

“Our survey identified that Americans can struggle to the point of embarrassment when it comes to maintaining consistent cleaning practices, which we know are critical for healthy homes and community spaces,” said Brian Sansoni, ACI’s SVP of communications and outreach.

Americans do understand the impact of a clean space, according to ACI. In the survey, a desire to declutter and organize was the leading motivation for 57% of respondents, followed closely by a new season/fresh start mindset (47%) and a desire to stay healthy and hygienic (46%).

“Spring cleaning is a great moment to refresh not only our homes, but our habits,” said Sansoni.

In the survey, 72% of respondents said they feel more relaxed with a clean and organized home than they do after getting a massage.
