As the holiday season draws near, listless consumers are turning Grade A cleaner-uppers.

For the American Cleaning Institute, there’s no thoughtful gift like a thoughtful cleaning routine to keep guests safe.

A fall cleaning survey conducted by Wakefield Research commissioned by the American Cleaning Institute revealed a whopping 91% of Americans make a concerted effort to clean their homes before entertaining guests during the holiday season. The effort household cleaners put in is a shiny reflection – not only of spotless countertops and polished hardwood floors – but a welcoming space where loved ones can relax and enjoy good company, food and beverages.

Fresh Scents and First Impressions

The survey also showed that 71% of hosts focus on tidying spaces visible to guests, ensuring that every nook and cranny contributes to a positive first impression. More than half (64%) of Americans empty receptacles to keep foul-smelling garbage out of sight, and 57% use air fresheners or candles to infuse their homes with cozy scents.

This year, the welcomeness of a clean abode is just as important to homeowners as protecting guests from illness-causing germs. With cold and flu season in the air, the survey says 44% of respondents are going the extra mile to disinfect surfaces. These proactive measures, officials say, reflect an awareness that thoughtful cleaning routines are essential for a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

“Holiday hosting shouldn’t be just about appearances – health and comfort matter just as much,’ said Jennifer Abril, ACI President and CEO. “Our survey shows that many Americans understand simple steps like disinfecting surfaces and freshening the air can make a big difference in how guests feel in your home.”
