BASF Declares Force Majeure for Select Vitamins, Carotenoids & Aroma Ingredients for Human Nutrition

Move comes after a fire in a BASF plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany last month.

As a result of a fire that occurred in a BASF plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany on July 29, BASF SE declared Force Majeure on deliveries of selected vitamins A and E, and carotenoid products as well as selected aroma ingredients, with immediate effect and until further notice. The selected aroma ingredients are Ionones, Pyranol, DL-Menthol, Rose Oxides, Ethyllinalool, Nerolidol and Isophytol R.

The declaration only impacts the human nutrition product portfolio. The Force Majeure didn’t affect the BASF’s Personal Care product portfolio,

The cause of the fire is under investigation. BASF created a dedicated website to provide updates on the fire.

No Major Injuries or Damage to the Environment

The fire occurred in a BASF plant that manufactures aroma ingredients and precursors for the vitamins A and E, and carotenoid production. All slightly injured employees could leave the Medical Center on the evening of the incident, according to BASF, which noted there was no contamination of air, water or soil. BASF’s environmental monitoring vehicles did not detect any product residues. The incident damaged the plant, which led to a shutdown and a supply disruption of the aforementioned products. Cleaning, inspection and repair work of the plant has started.
