The coronavirus pandemic has made for business unusual. Lockdowns in Asia, Europe, North and South America and Africa brought countries to a standstill, wreaked havoc with the global economy and pushed the world into recession. But COVID-19 has uncovered the resilience and ingenuity of employees. After all, who really used Zoom prior to the lockdown? Now, 50 year-old executives are old pros at the relatively new technology. Organizations can turn a dime too. Last month, the New York Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists canceled Suppliers’ Day 2020, but it remains dedicated to educating its members and the global beauty industry. “Based on the results of a NYSCC survey to members and the Suppliers’ Day community, as well as the still evolving effects of COVID-19 pandemic including travel restrictions, the New York Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists’ Executive Board has made the hard decision to not hold Suppliers’ Day this year,” said NYSCC Chair Giorgino Macalino. “NYSCC is unwilling to compromise the health and safety of our attendees, exhibitors and team,” said Macalino. “We are also unwilling to deliver what we feel would be a sub-standard Suppliers’ Day experience this year. While we are disappointed to forego having the event this year, we feel that it is the right decision for everyone involved.” Macalino went on to note that NYSCC has pivoted and is offering online educational programs to keep its members engaged throughout the pandemic. Next year, Suppliers’ Day will return to its traditional timeframe: May 4-5, 2021 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Happi has adapted and changed, too. We’ve expanded our online coverage, added e-newsletters, webinars and podcasts, and we’ll have more news to share about our evolving online presence in the next month or so. For now, be sure to read The International Top 30, our annual look at the leading players outside the US in the global household and personal products industry. With masks mandatory in many parts of the world, all eyes are on eyes. Also this month, read Melissa Meisel’s coverage of the multi-billion-dollar color cosmetics market. Plus, we look at packaging litigation and fragrance packaging trends. We hope you enjoy this edition of Happi, as always, we welcome your comments and suggestions.
