Believe it or not, the 2009 sun care season is upon us here in the U.S., and marketers are rolling out an array of products that boast high levels of UVA and UVB protection. But perhaps most importantly, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it will issue its final sunscreen standards by May…believe it or not. FDA first started tinkering with the category way back in 1978, during the Carter Administration when disco was king and having a tan was cool. Since then, there’s been tentative final monographs, final monographs and comment periods when industry could weigh in on the impact of the FDA rulings. When the final word from FDA finally comes out, will all stakeholders be pleased with the results? Probably not, but at least marketers, suppliers and consumers will have something concrete to work with. But if sun care is your thing, you don’t have to wait two months to get your fix. Happi.com includes our annual look at this fast-growing, $600 million category. For those forward-thinking formulators who are already looking ahead to Summer 2010, be sure to check out the lineup of new ingredients introduced by raw material suppliers during the past 12 months. It can be found immediately following the sun care article. For those who are looking for even more coverage of this market, take the time to read The Sunscreen Filter Industry expert Nadim Shaath reports on the important, albeit controversial, role that tanning salons play in this category. It’s all leading up to the Sunscreen Symposium, sponsored by the Florida Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, which will take place in September in Orlando. We’ll publish a preview and provide full coverage of this important event in upcoming issues of Happi. This edition of Happi also includes coverage of novel cosmetic ingredients, the antiperspirant and deodorant market, and selling fine fragrance during a recession. We hope you enjoy this edition of Happi. As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions. Tom Branna VP/Editorial Director tomb@rodpub.com
