Jared Leto won an Oscar for his supporting role as a dainty, cheeky trans-woman in 2013’s ambitious “Dallas Buyers Club.” Nearly a decade later, the actor, Gucci model and Thirty Seconds to Mars front man is playing another role as beauty entrepreneur with a launch of gender-neutral skin and hair care products.

First announced in Vogue, Leto’s desert-inspired beauty line is called Twentynine Palms. The prestige grooming line features 11 body, hair and skin care products inclusive of a moisturizing cream and serum formulated with prickly pear, aloe vera and evening primrose. Evening primrose oil contains emollient properties that help soften and smooth skin and improve overall texture.

Kate Forbes, global head of innovation for Aesop, has also joined the company, according to the magazine. The line debuts October 25, according to reports.

Organic Self-Care Meets Creativity

The actor told the outlet that he was not interested in beauty products per se, but the idea of self-care in an organic way. As a show of commitment to his brand, he has saturated himself into the desert concept by living in the Mojave Desert in southwestern Nevada. The formulations, he said, are made with desert botanicals, what he calls “resilient ingredients” to withstand any environmental offense, similar to cacti. The same can be analogized to humans and the preservation of youthful skin.

Other items in the line include a detoxifying kaolin powder clay mask and exfoliating solution to slough off dead skin cells to reveal a newer-looking complexion. An eye cream contains prickly pear extract to brighten and retinol and ceramides to stimulate collagen production and hydrate, respectively.

Merging sustainability and creativity, and in-line with the current environmentally-friendly packaging trend in the beauty space, the products are contained in refillable violet-hued glass, aluminum and post-consumer recycled plastic bottles to reflect amethyst-colored desert skies at dusk.

The personal care line is just the beginning for Twentynine Palms. Leto plans to branch out into other categories including fragrance, and forge partnerships with High Desert Test Sites, the artist residency near Coachella Valley, as well as limited-edition home and design objects with alternating multidisciplinary creators.
