Do consumers have a burning desire to know what’s in their sunscreen? Yes, say Dieux Co-founders Charlotte Palermino and Joyce de Lemos. The duo launched Sun-Screener, an online tool to assess suncare ingredient lists.

Users copy and paste SPF product ingredient lists and receive confirmation of efficacy, as well as insights on the formula’s UV filters, how they work and where they are approved. The launch comes as Europe and Australia approve new filters. Meanwhile, the US hasn’t approved a new sunscreen active since 1999.

Sun-Screener provides insights on nearly 40 inorganic and organic filters, including titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, and avobenzone and octocrylene. The device can create a blog component to address common SPF-related questions tied to the tool. To test the tool, click here.

According to Palermino and de Lemos, Sun-Screener was developed and peer-reviewed alongside cosmetic chemists Rebecca Perry and Ava Perkins. Perkins recently conducted the Future Chemists Workshop at NYSCC Suppliers’ Day. More than 140 students from 65 colleges and universities attended.
