With dandruff and hair loss issues plaguing millions of consumers, brands are formulating result-driven solutions to address density, fight flakes, correct scalp imbalances and repair bonds.

In the past decade, ingredient-savvy consumers expect more from their skincare in terms of sophistication and multifunctionality. They want retinol in their body washes, plumping peptides in their colored lip gloss and SPF 50 in their foundation.
In recent years, consumers have been scratching their heads about scalp health.
According to Dr. Alexis Young, a dermatologist with Hackensack University Medical Center, the scalp is often neglected in skincare routines and can lead to issues like dryness, irritation and even hair thinning, which might contribute to the perception of faster aging.
In terms of barrier function, the scalp experiences higher transepidermal water loss, in which it loses moisture more easily than facial skin, constituting a slightly weaker barrier function. This is partly due to the constant shedding of skin cells and hair growth cycle, she said. What’s more, the scalp’s barrier can be more easily compromised by external factors like UV radiation, pollution and harsh chemicals.
“While the scalp might have a slightly weaker barrier function and be more sensitive in some aspects, it’s not necessarily more delicate than facial skin,” she said. “Both areas require gentle care and protection to maintain their health and integrity.”
Because skin thickness and barrier function vary significantly between individuals and can be influenced by genetics, age and overall health, Dr. Young says in lieu of focusing on an arbitrary aging rate, brands and consumers alike should prioritize a holistic approach to both scalp and facial skincare including gentle cleansing with a mild shampoo, exfoliating to regularly remove product buildup and keeping the scalp moisturized with a lightweight conditioner or scalp serum.
In 2023, New York City trend tracker Spate found that the hashtag scalpcare surged +149.3% month-over-month on TikTok. While scalp serums and oils have been drenching the market with consumers putting their faith in rosemary oil, for one, and even red-light therapy to regrow hair, new innovations in shampoo and conditioner geared toward hair loss, scalp health and bond repair are emerging market trends.
Per Circana data, in the US multi-outlet with convenience stores for the 52 weeks ending Sept. 8, 2024, shampoo grew 6% to $5.7 billion. Dandruff shampoo sales rose 3.9% to $844.9 million. Conditioner sales rose 3.3% to $4.2 billion.
With its numerous celebrity campaigns—one of which was the brand’s first Super Bowl ad this past year with actor Michael Cera—CeraVe has been top-of-mind with consumers. Now, the brand can be top-of-head, too. Last month, the dermatologist-developed skincare brand entered the haircare category with the launch of two collections targeted at tackling dandruff. As many as one in five people suffer from the common scalp condition precipitated by the winter, skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, infrequent shampooing and even a poor diet.
“As we looked ahead to the future of CeraVe, we felt that hair and scalp care were a natural progression for the brand,” said Tom Allison, senior vice president and global head of professional sales and marketing. “Working hand-in-hand with our dermatologists, we were able to create anti-dandruff formulas with skin-identical ceramides that are not only effective for gently and effectively cleansing and treating dandruff without disrupting the scalp barrier, but also leaves hair feeling healthy and soft.”
The new Anti-Dandruff and Gentle Hydrating ranges are extensions of the brand’s essential ceramide blend found in its skincare products coupled with key ingredients that eliminate dandruff and boost hydration. The Anti-Dandruff range consists of a hydrating shampoo and conditioner and 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner formulated with pyrithione zinc to remove pesky flakes without disrupting the scalp barrier. The Hydrating range includes a shampoo and conditioner suited for all hair types, curl patterns, color-treated hair and sensitive scalps. In a consumer study, 97% of testers agreed their scalp felt immediately clean; 94% agreed hair felt manageable; and 93% agreed their hair felt moisturized for 24 hours.
European haircare brand Vichy Dercos also launched an anti-dandruff collection. The Selenium Sulfide anti-dandruff shampoo, hair and scalp moisturizing conditioner and salicylic acid anti-dandruff serum utilize L’Oréal’s hair science to help combat scalp issues associated with moderate to severe dandruff, and niacinamide and glycerin to soothe and hydrate the scalp.
JooY is another brand targeting dandruff. Launched on Earth Day, JooY was founded by Jennifer Yen, who also owns cosmetics brand Yensa Beauty and skincare line Purlisse. SKUs include clarify shampoo and conditioner, soothing scalp serum, scalp resurfacing serum and a scalp energizing brush. The serum contains a blend of papaya, apple cider vinegar, peppermint and salicylic acid. It should be applied prior to shampoo to remove buildup. The clarifying shampoo also includes apple cider vinegar, along with witch hazel, avocado and tea tree oil. It soothes irritation and fights frizz, leaving hair with a lemon-fresh scent. A soothing scalp serum relieves “stressed-out” scalps, per Yen, with rice water and algae to detoxifiy the scalp. The scalp stimulating massager’s rubber bristles are designed to stimulate blood flow to promote healthy hair growth and reduce hair loss. The device can be used in the shower before shampooing to improve the regimen’s effectiveness.
Also new to the haircare market is JB Skrub, the tween and teen skincare brand for boys founded in 2023 by actress Julie Bowen and advertising executive Jill Biren The brand’s latest launch, The Shampoo, is formulated with aloe vera, green tea and hydrolyzed rice protein to cleanse, purify and support healthy hair and scalp with a grapefruit scent.
This fall also saw the launch of luxury haircare brand Leonor Greyl’s Bain Traitant a la Propolis, a plant-based shampoo to treat dandruff and soothe irritated scalps. Hero ingredient propolis has antiseptic properties to help protect against further scalp conditions.
Hairapy debuted in June and promises to get to the root of hair loss. The brand was founded by double board-certified plastic surgeon and hair restoration specialist Dr. Jason Bloom. The brand’s three SKUs, formulated by Vege Labs, inclusive of a densifying shampoo and conditioner and scalp serum that smell fresh and clean (not floral or medicinal), treat hair loss at the follicular level with its patent-pending Bioadapt8 delivery system. As the name suggests, eight active and natural ingredients work to repair, nourish and strengthen delicate hair follicles to activate the shift from the rest stage to the growth phase while shielding hair from damaging UV rays and pollution. The densifying shampoo creates a healthy scalp environment that encourages new hair growth and exfoliates dead skin cells and product buildup while the conditioner seals the hair cuticle damaged by physical stress. The restorative scalp serum for sensitive, normal to dry scalp and normal to oily scalp are anti-inflammatory and block the intrusion of dihydrotestosterone, a hormone associated with hair loss in men.
Hairapy is tapping into a lucrative target audience. Per Bloom, some 56 million adults report hair loss and more than half of women will experience hair thinning at some point during their lifetime, due to genetics, hormones, stress, lifestyle, metabolism and nutrition deficiency. According to Spate analysts, this past summer, hair loss precipitated by hormonal changes was a significant concern for consumers. The query garnered an average of 4.5K monthly searches and a +67.4% growth in searches compared to last year. Top questions included “how to stop hormonal hair loss?” and “can hormonal hair loss be reversed?”
Like other startups and indie brands, Hairapy’s founding carries personal significance. Bloom’s business partner, a longtime player in the salon business, experienced hair loss from thyroid disease. According to Bloom, she also witnessed friends lose hair from hormonal changes, covid and undue stress—the latter of which is an issue that affected Bloom, too.
“I have had my own personal hair loss journey. A lot of patients at my facial plastic surgery office were losing hair as well. We treat it in non-surgical and surgical ways,” he said. Bloom works with Vegelabs in Glendale, CA to create its formulas. “It was a culmination of all of these reasons that we wanted to create something natural and effective that could help them provide results.”
Customers love the products, too.
“They appreciate that we are not only committed to formulating products to drive hair growth and restoration,” said Bloom, “but we focused on making their current hair shiny, thicker, voluminous and incredibly manageable.”
The Rootist is another brand capitalizing on creating hair care products that harmonize with the three phases of the hair growth cycle (anagen, catagen and telogen) to enhance manageability. Targeting environmental, product-related and emotional causes of hair thinning, The Rootist created the Densify Collection with its patent-pending technology, Rootbiomic Ferment. A blend of seven botanicals—red ginseng, reishi mushroom, skullcap root, coffee berry, centella asiatica, rice and pea protein—combine with two types of microbes during the fermentation process, which enhances the potency and bioavailability of these ingredients, says Kseniya Popova, the brand’s executive director of R&D and innovation. In doing so, antioxidant content and beta-glucan levels are increased while proteins are hydrolyzed into peptides and amino acids resulting in stronger hair.
Haircare brand V&Co. also leverages the use of peptides and amino acids, which are the building blocks that comprise proteins in the body. Founded by father-and-son team Tom and Mike Redmond, who created Aussie Hair Care and Renpure lines, V&Co. touts a proprietary peptide blend of peptides, amino acids, proteins and vitamins that work to boost hydration and blood flow to increase volume, intensify shine, fortify strength and add an extra layer of protection. Each of the brand’s four shampoo and conditioner duos cater to the needs of curly, wavy and straight hair. Its thickening shampoo and conditioner increases volume and reduces frizz in those experiencing hair thinning. The formulas rolled out this past summer in convenience and grocery stores nationwide.
Another innovation aimed at density restoration is IGK’s new Sponsored Hair Density Scalp Treatment. Formulated with biotin and peptides to support hair and scalp health, and pumpkin seed oil and rambutan seed to nourish and hydrate the scalp, respectively, the non-greasy mist visibly improves thickness and density in four weeks. In an independent consumer study at 12 weeks, 94% said volume, thickness and fullness improved while nine out of 10 agreed their ponytail felt thicker and saw significantly reduced thinning.
This past fall, Nutrafol launched a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner, Active Cleanse, formulated for men with thinning hair. Beyond cleansing, it aims to optimize scalp health by unclogging pores, removing buildup and balancing oil production without stripping the scalp or disrupting a healthy microbiome for stronger, fuller hair.
Two years ago, entrepreneur Eric Delapenha’s The Hair Lab by Strands aimed to revolutionize customizable haircare solutions by taking the guesswork out of selecting the right products via a data-driven approach. Using high-tech hair analysis, with either a handheld Strands Smart Scanner or online Strands Test, The Hair Lab analyzes customers’ hair in real-time, and recommends a suitable customized regimen.
The brand’s “test-first” model reflects the complexity and diversity of hair needs, which are impacted by myriad factors, from hair texture to scalp type. After going viral on TikTok, one user cheekily labeled its hair dose sets packaged with its functions (volume boosting, UV shield, etc.) in font types juxtaposing The Periodic Table, “hair crack.” A partnership with Walmart in 2022 helped the brand to reach $10 million in retail sales and north of 600,000 customers a year later. Most recently, Delapenha made an appearance on “The Today Show” on the heels of its recent rollout at CVS. The Hair Lab by Strands makes shampoos, conditioners and scalp serums.
Offering more than 1,000 personalized combinations, The Hair Lab’s test-first model reflects the complexity and diversity of hair needs. In an interview with Happi when the brand first launched, Delapenha said this model would change consumer perception of their hair along with educating the market on the value of hair testing.
The products contain unique ingredients such as apple cider vinegar to cleanse an oily scalp, and rice water to maintain optimal moisture levels to support a healthy scalp microbiome.
Biologique Recherche’s new and reformulated scalp and haircare innovations rebalance scalp and hair. The brand’s Shampooing Dermo-Apaisant helps repair issues tied to sensitive scalps, providing relief from itching and irritation. Its Shampoo VIP O2 eliminates pollutant particles to unveil shiny, healthier hair. Shampooing Sébo-Rééquilibrant is formulated with a biomimetic amino acid derivative, zinc and copper extracts and marine phytoplankton to regulate sebum for a cleansed and purified scalp. Shampooing Nutri-K works to preserve skin’s hydrolipidic film balance to shield strands from dryness resulting in soft, supple and shiny tresses. Its Crème de Soin doubles as a reparative hair mask and detangling properties of a conditioner to leave hair with a buttery, silky texture.
While scalp care is a critical concern for consumers, bond repair is equally important.
Bonding treatments offer a wide range of benefits including restoration and repair, shine boost, frizz control and more. The impact on hair can vary with technologies and application methods needed to activate bonding agents. Two years ago, Eric Pressly introduced his new Epres hair care line with its first SKU, a bond repair treatment. The concentrated solution made with patented biodiffusion technology gets mixed with water and spritzed into hair until fully drenched. After at least 10 minutes, it gets washed out before a blowout. The result is healthier, stronger hair.
Epres released a “planet-minded” follow-up called Healthy Hair Shampoo and Conditioner that is water-free and formulated with the same technology and biodegradable ingredients. Biodiffusion technology works by penetrating deep into the hair shaft, reconstructing bonds and strengthening strands from within, guaranteeing hair transformation long after drying, per the brand.
Like the bond repair treatment, the duo delivers professional-grade results for all hair types and is suitable for daily use. What’s more, they’re formulated with vanillin, which lends a naturally pleasant scent and aligns with current fragrance trends. The shampoo, clear and viscous in texture, contains malic acid and coco-glucoside. The lightweight conditioner, soft lavender in color, can be washed out or left in for thirstier strands or to treat problem areas.
Two months prior to launch, Epres announced a global ambassador program for licensed beauty professionals. The new initiative celebrates hairstylists and aims to validate the efficacy of the brand’s inaugural technology through the influence of these global tastemakers. As part of their ambassador role, the professionals will receive exclusive assets and unique affiliate codes, empowering them to kick-start conversations around healthy hair and provide content about Epres on social media.
In October, Olaplex announced its newest global brand ambassador: celebrity hairstylist Vernon François, who has styled the hair of Oscar- and Grammy-winning stars from Lupita Nyong’o to Lil Naz X.
Another brand making waves in the bond repair sector in hair care is The Beachwaver Co. Cofounded in 2010 by Sarah Potempa—a celebrity hairstylist with famous clientele that include Margot Robbie—Beachwaver made its mark with hot tools, like its rotating curling iron.
“Back when I started as a hairdresser 20 years ago, I worked with Procter & Gamble for 10 years and was able to work and learn a lot about chemistry,” recalled Potempa. “I really wanted somebody that understands the chemistry of haircare, someone who understands the functionality of the formulas, and also how to create a flexible polymer. That’s super important to me because I work at Fashion Week and I understand how people want to change their look now. It’s important that the products can work doing one thing and then you can change your style. It’s got to be flexible.”
Apart from its hero curling irons, The Beachwaver Co. catalog now includes dry shampoo, leave-in and toning conditioner, heat protectant hair spray, charcoal shampoo bar, marula hair oil and reed diffusers. Fragrance variants include Polynesian Pink Sugar and Bali Beach Night. Both scents can be found in its new body butter lineup as part of its recent foray into body care.
This past fall, the brand introduced Shine Bright shampoo and conditioner. The launch was inspired, in part, by the argan oil in Beachwaver’s viral “Bring Balance” hair oil.
“The argan in the serum has been so popular, so we really wanted to have a shine-based product,” explained Potempa.
Formulated with argan oil and vegan keratin aimed to strengthen internal restructuring of bonds, the shampoo and conditioner duo works to revitalize and enhance hair’s natural shine. The sulfate-free formulas include vitamin B5, organic aloe, shea butter, and coconut and avocado oils to deeply moisturize and soften hair for a smooth and lustrous look and feel.
With bond repair experiencing a +210.3% year-over-year growth per Spate, healthy hair is all the rage this winter 2024 as DIYers seek bond repair treatments to nail the look.
