A scalp massage isn’t new to the spa scene, but a treatment with products formulated by hair scientists at Nutrafol offers a new take on the wellness ritual.

The Unilever-owned scalp care brand has partnered with The Well at the Mayflower Inn in Washington, CT to create a scalp care ritual.

“For our first spa treatment service, we wanted a partner we had a strong synergy with and could help us strategically reach consumers with this message,” explained Jen Nichols, VP-brand marketing, Nutrafol.

The partnership between Nutrafol and The Mayflower Inn and The Well emerged from their shared commitment to holistic wellness and innovative health solutions, according to Nutrafol officials.

The Experience

Offered exclusively by The Well at Mayflower Inn, the 30-minute appointment is a six-step process that begins with guests completing an evaluation of their general health and hair health—think dryness, redness or sensitive skin—which allows the practitioner to customize the treatment with specific products from Nutrafol’s Scalp Care Line.

Nutrafol’s topical products care for scalp.

The assessment includes use of a camera to identify where the client may be experiencing product buildup or clogged hair follicles—all factors that affect hair and scalp health.

“Nutrafol is all about educating consumers on the underlying factors that contribute to hair shedding and thinning, while providing them with whole-body formulations to support their hair health,” said Nichols.

The service begins with massaging Nutrafol Scalp Care products into the scalp  – including shampoo, conditioner and exfoliating mask – before rinsing the hair and finishing with Nutafol’s Scalp Essence.

“The experience is designed to be relaxing, but also stimulate blood flow to the scalp, promoting additional stimulation to the follicles,” said Nichols.

At the end of the appointment, guest undergo another scalp assessment to show progress from the treatment and provide a recommendation of products for continued use—including the addition of Nutrafol Hair Growth Supplements to support hair health from the inside and out, said Nichols.

“A healthy microbiome and a healthy balanced scalp is an important contributor to overall hair health and growth,” observed Nichols.

Finally, guests are treated to a tea infused with Nutrafol Collagen and a product goodie bag.

Summer Calls for Scalp Care

The sweltering summer is prime season for scalp care.

In a recent study, Nutrafol discovered that while 90% of consumers know that extreme summer heat can impact hair, 43% aren’t taking any precautions to protect their hair against extreme summer heat (defined as 90° F or greater), which can cause increased hair shedding.

This summer has already been a hot one on the East Coast. In fact, most of the country has been experiencing extreme heat through early July.

Popular summer pastimes and activities can impact scalp health, too.

“Specifically in the summer months, external stressors like swimming in salt water and chlorine, UV exposure and travel can all impact your hair and scalp – which is another reason we’re excited to be offering this treatment through August,” said Nichols.

Available through August 31, Nutrafol’s Scalp Ritual at the Mayflower Inn x The Well is $165 for the full treatment and scalp assessment. The experience includes a selection of curated products from Nutrafol to take home, plus a special subscription offer for Nutraol hair growth supplements.

“We see this as a great opportunity to educate customers both on the benefits of a healthy scalp and Nutrafol’s array of clinically tested products,” added Nichols.

While officials did not confirm if the treatment ritual would become a fixture on the spa menu at the Mayflower Inn, Nutrafol has other projects underway with The Well.

According to Nichols, Nutrafol is hosting a Skin Health Series at The Well with master estheticians like Irene Forte and Joanna Vargas through summer and into fall. The series will provide private skin care consultations complemented by a personalized treatment, she said.
