Skin Cancer Doesn’t Take a Vacation

Beach days call for sunscreen!

The Branna family vacation came early this year. With work schedules tight, a week at the Jersey Shore took place in the middle of June. The week was marked by the celebration of my daughter’s engagement, so relatives came from far and wide to spend some time in the sun.

The happy occasion gave me a chance to quiz guests on their sunscreen use. Unfortunately, too many of them said they rarely applied sun protection. Why? Reasons ranged from “I forget” to “I don’t tan” to “I’m never out in the sun.” Of course, I pointed out the importance of proper sun protection, but you can’t teach old dogs or young pups a thing these days.

With summer upon us, sun protection should be top-of-mind for everyone. It is for many consumers judging by online searches. According to Google, searches for Bemotrizinol sunscreen have surged in the past month. That’s due to DSM-Firmenich’s efforts to get BMT approved by the US FDA, coupled with FDA’s call for animal testing of all organic sunscreens. Happi has covered both topics in recent issues. Last month, DSM-Firmenich held its third annual Safer Under the Sun Day in Washington DC to underscore the importance of sun care. For a look at some of the latest trends in UV protection, visit Happi.com for coverage of the recent sunscreen update put together by the NYSCC.

In print, if it’s July, it’s time for The Top 50, our annual summer blockbuster that reports on the latest activities of the largest US-based companies in the household and personal products industry. Also, this month, we report on issues surrounding the all-important preservative category. This issue includes an update on trends in the facial cosmetics category. We’re fortunate to work with the Chinese American Cosmetic Professional Association on several features. Read Liyuan Ji’s article on animal testing in China.

Finally, be sure to check out the latest insights from our columnists. If you’re thinking about a career move, Dave Jensen has some interview tips. Valerie George answers your burning questions regarding cosmetic formulation. Finally, Paolo Giacomoni reviews the unexpected effects of applying cosmetics.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Happi. As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions. Here’s my suggestion…put on that sunscreen!
